Creating Characters

Great villains and heroes make for great stories. Think about some of the best villains and heroes you have read about – the ones that stick in your memory. Villains such as the child-catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Voldemort and Umbridge in Harry Potter, Miss Trunchball in Matilda, and James’s aunts in James and the Giant Peach. Strong leading characters who are interesting and relatable make for great heroes, like David Walliams’ Boy in a Dress and Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Charlie Bucket. Other heroes are characters with super powers, like Superman. Heroes of all kinds often have special qualities such as loyalty, selflessness or bravery. These activities will help you create some fantastic characters to use in your own creative writing.
